in my naivety i posted on a large pi­geon shoot­ing so­cial me­dia group the ques­tion: “What would you say is the most im­por­tant kit needed if you are start­ing out pi­geon shoot­ing?” the first 20 re­sponses were “gun”.

the gun has to be light and ma­noeu­vrable and my Beretta Sil­ver Pi­geon 20-bore did the trick for me. James shot with the more manly 12bore vari­ant and this too worked well. in terms of car­tridges, though much of the lit­er­a­ture sug­gests light loads of No. 7 shot, i would have liked the ex­tra punch you get with 25g No.6 shot. a note on car­tridges: you can never bring too many.
