As the after­noon drew on and the dogs be­gan cast­ing long shad­ows on to the stub­ble, my shoot­ing was im­prov­ing slightly, but it was time to call it a day and get to a de­li­cious sup­per with James’s par­ents.

We took the hide down and pickedup the bag, which to­talled 64 pi­geons and a jack­daw — what a day.

As it was laid out, I would be ly­ing if I said I didn’t have a twinge of ap­pre­hen­sion about the pluck­ing that I would be do­ing to­mor­row. But what a feast we would have.
