Breeds in focus

-

As you would expect from a breed that has its origins on the bleak and wind-swept Cumbrian moors, the Fell pony is both tough and adaptable. Most are a sturdy 13.2hh, with the upper height limit 14hh, but despite their small stature they can carry adult riders. Originally bred as pack ponies, transporting lead or slate from the Pennine mines, they were also used for shepherding and driving, and even bringing the grouse panniers off the moors.

Today they are valued as all-round family ponies, while their unflappable temperament makes them ideal for disabled riders. HM the Queen is a Fell pony enthusiast: she is not only patron of the Fell Pony Society, but still rides out in Windsor Park on her Fell pony. Black is one of the most popular colours, but grey, bay and brown are permitted.
