While I’m very ex­cited about the prospect of send­ing a nanoprobe to a ‘nearby’ star (Cut­ting Edge, April), I’m won­der­ing what pro­vi­sion will need to be in place to re­ceive the probe’s sig­nal when it even­tu­ally trick­les back to Earth. I as­sume the use of the word ‘nano’ ex­cludes the op­tion of tak­ing a crate of car bat­ter­ies along; has any­one costed hol­low­ing out the Moon and paint­ing the in­side white?
