Message of thanks from England coach

Former Maidenhead RFC captain Simon Cripps received an unexpected message of thanks from the England head coach Eddie Jones this week, after his fundraising efforts for the NHS.

To mark his 40th birthday the Claires Court School teacher took on 40 challenges in 40 days, raising more than £8,000 for NHS staff caring for COVID-19 patients.

The NHS saved his life when he was badly burned 20 years ago. He was placed on a life support machine and told there was a chance he’d never walk again.

Just seven months later, after incredible support from the NHS and his family, he turned out once more for Maidenhead RFC.

Another reason Simon chose to support NHS charities is that his wife Cara works as a key worker on the front line, doing her best to save lives from COVID-19.

In the video message Jones said: “Simon, Eddie Jones here. I heard you were doing 40 challenges for your 40th birthday to thank the NHS for saving your life when you were a Harlequins u21s and Maidenhead player. Well done mate. Thanks to all of your family who’s worked for the NHS over the years, including your wife Cara who’s been on the frontline lately.

“I hope you raise lots of money for the NHS charities, and we really appreciate all the work you’ve been doing mate.”
