UK Internal Market bill will put Her Majesty in an invidious position
What is most interesting about Joy Morrissey’s Commons Sense article in the Windsor Express of September 18 is what she does not say.
The Internal Market Bill, which she is so keen to support is illegal, as currently drafted, under International law.
The bill is a duplicitous attempt to circumvent the EU Withdrawal Agreement, a legally-binding international treaty, enthusiastically supported and voted for by every Conservative MP and promoted by Boris Johnson to the electorate as the agreement that ‘got Brexit done’.
What is particularly egregious is to see Joy Morrissey, and her neighbouring MP for Windsor Adam Afriyie, actively supporting Government legislation that, if put forward for Royal Assent, will amount to the second time in a matter of months that Tory governments have constitutionally embarrassed Her Majesty.
First there was the illegal prorogation of Parliament last year, which the Supreme Court determined was illegal.
Now, the UK Internal Market bill will put Her Majesty in the invidious position of having to give her personal consent to a bill which breaks the law.
To compromise the integrity of the Queen once is reprehensible.
To contrive to do it a second time is cynical malice aforethought on the part of the Government and their Parliamentary lobby-fodder constituency MPs such as Adam Afriyie and Joy Morrissey.
