All areas: Pretty lights bring festive cheer to high street

Christmas lights for Ascot, Eton, Maidenhead and Windsor were lit up at the weekend – minus the usual switch-on events.

Normally, the annual switch-on in Maidenhead would kick-off with a countdown at the Town Hall in St Ives Road.

As residents cannot gather in the same way this year, the Royal Borough has started up a Christmas lights prize draw to make up for the absence of the usual switch-on events.

It has asked residents to join in by putting up festive displays in front gardens and house windows.

Anyone who sets up a festive display from now until Sunday, December 6 should snap a photo to be in the running for a £250 prize.

Residents should post pictures tagging @MyRoyalBorough on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #LightUpMyRBWM.

The winner will be announced on Friday, December 11.

Councillor Samantha Rayner, deputy leader of the council, said: “This year has been a challenging year for us all, and we wanted to find ways of the borough getting in the festive spirit and spreading some good cheer on our streets.

“I am really looking forward to seeing all the wonderful displays in your gardens and windows celebrating the festive season.”

■ A 42 foot Christmas tree was installed in Slough last week.

It was announced in August that the usual switching-on ceremony would be cancelled due to coronavirus.

Slough Borough Council said at the time the there would still be a tree in the High Street with more than 8,000 lights, as well as trees in Chalvery Road east and Harrow Market in Langley.

The council tweeted on Friday: “Oooh those elves have been busy! The 42ft town centre Christmas tree is now fully decorated and wowza it looks beautiful.”
