Trust support on Rebels stance to scrap season

-

The Slough Town Supporters Trust has lent its support to the club’s decision not to play matches while the outcome on a vote to determine whether the season should be scrapped is still unknown.

The club have been one strongly opposed to the season continuing without vital grant support or improved safety measures to protect players, club staff and their families from COVID-19.

They’ve voted to cancel the season as it stands the null and void the results to date and, while not all Slough supporters will share this view, the Supporters Trust believes it is the right decision and says it’s difficult to make a case for teams travelling miles to play matches while the country is in lockdown and battling variants of the COVID-19 virus. Slough have informed the league they won’t play matches until a vote on whether to continue with or scrap the season is known, but, if clubs do vote in the majority to play on in the National League South, they’ll have a decision to make as to whether they fall back in line and return to the field or stick to their guns and accept the league’s sanctions.

The league does look as if it’s taking some steps to improve safety protocols, with plans being readied to provide weekly COVID tests for players at no cost to the club. It is thought this could be brought in as soon as the middle of this month.

“Whilst we would all love to be back cheering on our clubs, we feel at this particular time there are more important steps that need to be taken to ensure that we can get back to as normal as possible as soon as possible.

“As a Trust, we consider the welfare of everyone involved in the sport whether playing, coaching, officiating, volunteering, or spectating as paramount. When we are all being asked to follow the Lockdown guidelines and restrict any journey to essential journeys only and restrict contact to close family bubbles only, it is difficult to substantiate the need for players and officials to travel outside of their local areas with the possibility of carrying the virus or returning home carrying the virus back.”
