Red Letter day for Horlicks sign
The red lettering on top of Slough’s refurbished Horlicks factory has been illuminated to mark the next chapter in the building’s history.
Developer Berkely Homes has been working on the major regeneration of the former Horlicks factory site since May 2020 in a project which will result in the construction of almost 1,300 new homes.
The refurbishment of the iconic red-brick factory has been centre piece of the project with the building now featuring 161 apartments, a cinema, co-working space and roof-top garden.
The renowned red lettering was removed from the top of the factory building for the first time in 100 years in 2020 due to it falling into disrepair.
It has since been replaced with replacement signage to continue the factory’s legacy.
A ceremony took place on Wednesday, March 20 to illuminate the historic lettering.
Elkie Russell, managing director, Berkeley Oxford & Chiltern, said: “We are immensely proud of the remarkable transformation at Horlicks Quarter and within the restored Factory itself. Many of the historic landmarks have now been restored to their former glory, including the War Memorial, Chimney and Clock Tower.
“Since its construction in 1908, the building was used for the manufacture of the Horlicks malted drink.
“Following the closure of this much-loved local landmark building in 2018, and an extensive refurbishment, we were delighted to have recently welcomed our first residents within the building.
“Coming together to light the Horlicks lettering on the rooftop represented a celebration of the start of the next chapter for the Horlicks Factory.”
Slough Borough councillors received a tour of the refurbished factory building last week which now features
a vast atrium in the heart of the site.
The building features apartments spread across multiple floors, a glass elevator as well as a glass roof which sees sunlight beam through onto the building’s internal gardens.
A new co-working studio has also been built in the top of the historic clock tower.
Berkeley Homes said a new café is expected to open in the regeneration site’s Clocktower Square later this spring.
A pedestrian and cycle route has also been created from Stoke Poges Lane through to Stoke Gardens – creating a direct pedestrian link to the town centre and Slough Railway Station.
