Premier Cup remains a priority for trophy holders Singh Sabha
East Berkshire Football League: Holders prepare to defend their crown in Friday's final against red-hot Old Windsor
Singh Sabha Chairman, Huggy Sandhu, insists that the Slough Town Premier Cup remains high on their list of priorities as the team prepares to defend the silverware in this seasons final on Good Friday, writes Rob Stevens.
Sabha have a proud history of success in multiple Cup competitions and, despite admittedly not being in top form at present, will not give up one of the most prestigious and historic trophies without a fight.
Singh Sabha must beat a red-hot Old Windsor at the 1878 Stadium, home of Burnham F.C., to retain the Slough Town Cup for another year, and Sandhu believes that the key to success might be keeping the football on the floor.
He explained: “Our form is okay at the moment, it could have been better, but it’s probably and mainly down to inconsistency in the team each week.
“I remember that the Semi Finals match was hard work against a good team in Virginia Water Reserves, even though the final scoreline was 3-0 to us. I wasn’t sure that our side that day was strong enough with some key players missing so, to make it all the way to the Final means the players had to put on a good performance.
“The Slough Town Cup is always high on our list of competitions to win each season, especially as we are the current holders.”
Sandhu continued: “Old Windsor have always had a competitive side and I am not surprised that they have made the final.
They battle for every ball and their strength is mainly from their aerial abilities and set pieces. If we can keep the ball on the deck, this is the way to get through to goal against them.”
If Singh Sabha are to retain the Slough Town Cup they will have to do something that has not been possible for them so far this season and beat Old Windsor. Sabha have managed a
draw and been beaten at the hands of the Os in the East Berkshire League Premier Division this season, as well as suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup.
The main threat from Singh Sabha could come from Mubarak Bashir who has scored at a rate of a goal-per-game in his 16 appearances so far this season. Both Hassan Mahmood and
Pritpal Raju are other notable dangers having both netted 12 times in this campaign from 14 and 17 appearances respectively.
