CARDIFF chippy Albany Fish Bar is pulling out all the stops to celebrate 50 years in business, which includes a Guinness World Record attempt.

To go back in time and celebrate from the start of the story, it will be selling a portion of chips for a shilling, which in today’s currency is 5p per portion, on the anniversary itself – February 20.

It has already decked out the popular chippy like a 1960s dining room, complete with melamine furniture, vintage posters and stone earthenware crockery. The Albany Fish Bar will transport customers back to the 60s and is encouraging chip-lovers to bring in any old pictures they have of Albany Road in return for a free portion of chips.

Albany Fish Bar is a proud National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) member and has also held the NFFF Fish and Chip Quality Award, since 2011. NFFF, the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the fish and chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry.

NFFF regional director for Wales, John Penaluna stated: “Fish and chips are the undisputed national dish of Great Britain, becoming a cultural and culinary symbol of our country, instantly recognised as British the world over.

“The origins and development of the dish in the mid-19th century are closely associated with the industrial revolution and it has maintained huge popularity as the original, affordable and nutritious takeaway ever since.

“To see Albany Fish Bar celebrating its 50th anniversary is a wonderful achievement and great credit to the industry. We wish Mr Akhtar great luck in the charity work he is undertaking in support of Cancer Research when the shop will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the quickest chip wrapping.”

Owner, Waseem Akhtar, whose family took over running of the fish bar in 1986, has
