Pupils get dressed up for our St David’s Day pullouts

DON’T they look fabulous!

They turned up to school in their thousands dressed up in their St David’s Day finery – and they’re about to feature in the Echo.

Over the past month, hundreds of classes of children at schools throughout Cardiff have been photographed by a team of professional photographers.

In preparation for March 1 – the biggest annual day in the Welsh cultural calendar – the pupils came to school dressed in traditional Welsh costume, Wales rugby and football shirts... and a few even came as dragons!

As this sneak peek of just some of those hundreds of pictures show, the results have been simply fantastic.

From Dai caps and waistcoats to the traditional stovepipe-style hat with apron, and one or two human daffodils, the schoolchildren have already really entered into the spirit of the occasion.

And next week the Echo will feature a special pullout supplement every day from Monday to Friday, crammed with those brilliant photos to celebrate our patron saint’s day.

So if your child or grandchild is in nursery, reception or years one and two at one of the more than 50 schools who took part in this initiative, be sure to keep an eye out for your little darling in the paper.

Each day, we’ll feature a 16-page pullout packed with pictures from individual schools, together with details about how you can order prints directly from the photographers.

We’ll be running the schools’ pictures on the following days:

Monday: Lansdowne Primary; Ysgol Glan Morfa; St Monica’s; Roath Park Primary; Pwll Coch; Grangetown Primary; Trowbridge; Greenway; and Willowbrook.

Tuesday: Fairwater; St Alban’s; Melin Gruffydd; Pentrebane; Peter Lea; Holy Family; St Paul’s; St Mary’s; Rhydypenau; Ysgol Gynradd Penygroes; Lakeside; St Mellons; and Pen y Bryn.

Tryst Williams, editor of the South Wales Echo, said: “St David’s Day is always a great occasion on which to celebrate our shared identity – and this year now has even more reason to cheer thanks to this great new initiative.

“It’s fantastic to see how much children, parents and teachers have got behind this scheme in its first year and I hope the results will bring a smile to the faces of readers everywhere.”
