Former chapel could be yours for just £9,000

THIS derelict, 200-year-old chapel is up for auction – and it comes complete with its own graveyard.

The former Ebenezer Chapel, which is overrun by Japanese knotweed, is up for sale as Rhondda Cynon Taf council looks to give the old building the chance of securing a new lease of life.

It’s being sold by auctioneers Seel and Co, and the Grade II-listed building will go under the hammer later this month with a starting price of just £9,000.

The old chapel has the potential for its usage to be changed, and the listing says: “The property could possibly be used for other purposes such as a day nursery/creche, art gallery, museum, training centre etc, but it also represents a conversion opportunity for residential use or other uses appropriate in a residential area subject to obtaining all necessary consents.”

The chapel was built in 1811, and it is recorded that the area’s congregation gathered stones for the original building from the nearby common.

It was said to have been rebuilt in 1850, later becoming the centre of religious revival activity in the Cynon Valley.

That legacy lasted, and occupied as a place of it was worship up until disuse.

The building on Ebenezer Street in Trecynon near Aberdare has two storeys, but its windows are now boarded up, with the outside overrun by weeds, so the auctioneers can only carry out external viewings.

The building could not be inspected internally because of health and safety concerns.

But it’s understood it has an entrance lobby, congregational room and gallery seating, rear room, toilet and storeroom.
