Chance to have your say on big plans for the Bay

NEW images of a planned landmark Cardiff Bay tower have been released, as a public consultation on the scheme is launched.

The Dolffin Quay scheme, planned for a three-acre site near the historic Norwegian Church, was first revealed by Associated British Ports (ABP) last year.

At its heart would be a 20-storey apartment block providing 200 apartments, with panoramic views across the city and the Bristol Channel.

As well as the tower block, the plans for Dolffin Quay include:

A new park, public realm and open space at the heart of the scheme;

Waterfront shops and restaurants in three new kiosks, as well as in two dockside and bayside buildings;

Five additional homes in the dockside building; and

A new promenade linking the scheme to Mermaid Quay and Porth Teigr.

The public are being asked to give their views as part of a statutory 28-day public consultation period which runs until April 17.

The responses will inform ABP’s planning application submission to Cardiff council.

The site comprises Britannia Quay, Britannia Park, and hardstanding formerly used as the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre – a building which was popularly known as the Tube.

ABP has already undertaken preplanning discussions with Cardiff council officials and series of stakeholder meetings. And last November it held a public exhibition on its Dolffin vision.

Developers said the scheme would enhance the area’s surroundings, but it sparked a mixed reaction when the initial images were first released.

In November, Nerys Lloyd-Pierce, chairwoman of Cardiff Civic Society, said: “Cardiff has enough anonymous, high-rise blocks, and enough apartments – developments that tend to favour developers rather than people.

“The city needs affordable family homes, complete with attractive outdoor spaces, that generate a sense of community.”

Rhys Morgan, property manager at ABP South Wales, said: “Our proposals aim to support the City of Cardiff Council’s aspiration for the Bay’s continued regeneration, and have evolved in response to the feedback we have received over the past few months.

“We want Cardiff to rival other capital cities across the globe. We’re looking forward to sharing our planning application with the local community and gathering feedback so we have the best possible proposal for this important area of the Bay.”
