CHOCOLATE ORANGE BAGUETTES?!

- RUTH MOSALSKI Reporter ruth.mosalski@walesonline.co.uk

WE’VE seen everything from the pulled pork sundae to the 2,000-calorie doubledonut burger.

But just when you thought the weird and wonderful culinary options on Cardiff’s foodie scene could get no stranger, they did.

A newsagent in the city has come up with some of the most unusual sandwiches going – filling the lunchtime offerings with things like Liquorice Allsorts.

One of Phil Daly’s latest ideas, at Channings, in City Road, caters for sandwich lovers with a sweet tooth but who also like to eat their greens – because he’s mixed Terry’s Chocolate Orange pieces with lettuce.

Another of his baguettes, which all retail at £1.99, was filled with Liquorice Allsorts.

It all started years ago with sarnies stuffed with Marmite, mustard and Jelly Beans.

Now, after a bit of a break, he’s brought his quirky sandwiches back.

Creative Phil said his inspiration was “anything that sounds just totally wrong – that’s the type of sandwich we try to make”.

He added: “I’ve been doing them for years but haven’t done them for a while. I just decided a few weeks ago to do a couple of new ones. “It’s just something different.” He’s not sure who it is that snaps them up, but the sandwiches are flying off the shelves and Phil said he thinks they may well have caused a stir among workers in nearby offices popping out for something a little different for lunch.

“I don’t know who’s buying them but I guess when someone picks them up and takes them back to the office it’s a bit of a laugh,” he added.

Last year a poll declared the humble bacon butty to be Britain’s favourite sandwich, pipping prawn mayonnaise to the top spot.
