It’s workers v Daleks... and the winner is Comic Relief

-

WORKERS at a city incinerator are preparing for their moment in the spotlight on national TV – complete with Daleks.

Staff from Viridor’s Cardiff plant were filmed in front of the Wales Millennium Centre on Saturday with Doctor Who’s deadly enemies for BBC’s Let’s Sing and Dance for Comic Relief.

The routine – featuring 10 workers in red noses, brooms and hi-viz jackets, performing the Dirty Dancing classic (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life with the Daleks – will be screened on Saturday.

Mark Poole, education centre and community benefits manager at the facility in Splott, said: “It was great for the team at the Viridor Energy Recovery Facility to have the opportunity to get involved in supporting Comic Relief, we’re always up for supporting a good cause.

“We knew we’d be doing a spot of dancing, but ending up doing a routine with Daleks from Doctor Who was certainly out of this world – we certainly had the time of our lives.”

Stephen Barratt, a contracts administration assistant, said: “We had great fun helping Viridor clean up the streets of Cardiff – the Daleks didn’t stand a chance.”

And Kim Holland, also a contracts administration assistant, added: “It was fantastic to be involved with such a good cause and we even got to meet the Daleks.”

The facility recently hit the headlines when plans to increase the amount of waste it handles were approved, a decision which sparked criticism from people living nearby.

Let’s Sing and Dance for Comic Relief will be broadcast on BBC One on Saturday at 6.45pm.
