Warning of rail and road delays at the weekend

-

PEOPLE travelling into Cardiff this weekend are being warned of possible delays on both the roads and the railway.

No trains will run between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street stations and some services will be diverted via different routes into and out of Cardiff because of work to the rail line.

Buses will replace trains between Cardiff Central and Cogan, Penarth, Barry Island and Bridgend via the Vale of Glamorgan.

The changes will be in place all day on Saturday and Sunday with the work due to be completed by the early hours of Monday.

Improvement work is being carried out by Network Rail, which will be replacing track at the east end of platforms four and six at Cardiff Central station as part of the Cardiff area signalling renewals scheme.

Staff will be working during the day and night to replace track.

Neil Workman, programme manager at Network Rail Wales, said: “The Cardiff Area Signalling Renewal project has helped to bust congestion and deliver a more reliable railway across the Cardiff and Valleys network, as well as providing a brand new platform and waiting area at Cardiff Central.

“This work is a cornerstone of our Railway Upgrade Plan to build a bigger, better railway here in Wales. We will continue to work with our partners Arriva Trains Wales and Welsh Government to improve our railway for passengers.

“We apologise to passengers and local residents for any inconvenience caused as we carry out this final piece of work.”

On Sunday, the Cardiff Bay 10k will be held in the city meaning some road closures will be in place during the event.

A 2k family run starts at 10am with the main run begins at 11am.

The event village is near the Wales Millennium Centre and the runners will make their way along Lloyd George Avenue before heading over to Roath Lock and the barrage and returning to the finish point.

A spokesman for the event said: “Some temporary road closures will be in place on the day along Lloyd George Avenue, Pierhead Street and Central Link in order to ensure the safety of all runners.

“These will only be in place between 10am and 1.30pm, allowing enough time for participants to safely arrive and leave the race.”

The 10k has sold out but there are limited spots for the 2k and families can sign up on the day.

Steve Brace, head of event delivery for Run 4 Wales, said: “The changes we have made to the CAVC Cardiff Bay Run have proved popular with runners who seem to like the new 10k distance.

“Run 4 Wales are proud of their Welsh roots, so we have enjoyed an opportunity to showcase some of Cardiff’s finest landmarks and work closely with our new Welsh title sponsor Cardiff and Vale College.

“Once again we have also linked up with the event’s charity partner Cystic Fibrosis and there will be hundreds of runners raising money for them on the day.”
