DRUG and alcohol abuse are more commonly associated with teenagers, students and younger age groups.

But according to an important new study, substance misuse is becoming a growing concern among people aged 50 and above.

A report by the Advisory Panel on Substance Misuse (APoSM), on behalf of the Welsh Government, found that older adults in Wales are more likely than younger adults to exceed the recommende­d alcohol limits.

Latest figures show that at least 20% of the over 50s population in the UK exceeds recommende­d alcohol units on a weekly basis.

They also revealed that the only group where referrals to substance misuse treatment services are increasing is those aged 50 and above.

And alcohol-related deaths are higher for adults aged 55 to 74 than in any other age group in the UK.

The report concludes that although there is significan­t work already underway, substance misuse services “need to adapt” to meet the needs of older adults.

The report states: “Substance misuse among many older adults is a hidden problem.

“Older adults may not talk about their substance misuse or may play down their intake.

“This may be due to a feeling of shame, fear of stigma, or embarrassm­ent.

“In many cases, they may not even realise they are exceeding the recommende­d limits for alcohol use, or developing a dependence on their prescribed medication.
