My Generation seeks to support people over 50

-

GROWING older can be a stressful and unsettling experience, which is why Mind Cymru has teamed up with Age Cymru to offer free support and guidance to people over 50.

The project, called “My Generation”, brings people together to discuss their experiences and offer support to each other on a range of topics including relationship building and managing stress.

Over the course of eight weekly sessions, people learn how to stay mentally well while spending time with others and enjoying activities such as Tai Chi, art and flower arranging.

Julia James, senior project officer at Mind Cymru, said: “My Generation seeks to help people find strength through ageing.

“We know that getting older may have its challenges – for example leaving work, loneliness, money worries and bereavement – and these can all affect our wellbeing.

“My Generation has been set up to help people who are affected by these issues, and offers help, guidance and support in navigating what can be difficult times.

“The sessions are very informal and offer the unique opportunity for those taking part to share their stories, provide support to each other and learn new coping skills.”

My Generation is currently available in five locations across South Wales – Merthyr and the South Wales Valleys, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Newport and Pembrokeshire – although the scheme is due to be rolled out across Wales in 2018.

Victoria Lloyd, director of external affairs and programme development at Age Cymru, added: “‘People of all ages can be affected by challenges in life. From time to time we can all experience negative reactions to life events, but if we do experience emotional problems in older age it’s important to know that help is available.

“That’s where the My Generation project comes in, to help older people maintain good mental health and wellbeing.”

Anyone interested in taking part in My Generation should contact their local Mind, Age Cymru or Age Connects Morgannwg for more information.
