331 candidates standing for election to city council

-

THE full candidate list for Cardiff council’s elections this year has been published – and there are 331 people who hope to be elected after the results are counted on May 4.

Elections are being held in all 22 Welsh local elections.

For the past five years in Cardiff, Labour has had control of Cardiff council.

At this year’s election both Labour, led by Phil Bale, and the Liberal Democrats, led by Elizabeth Clark, will field candidates in all 75 seats in the city, according to the list published yesterday.

The Conservatives, led by David Walker, will field 74 candidates.

Plaid Cymru, led by Neil McEvoy, has 59 candidates.

Each of the four party leaders are themselves standing again.

The Green Party and The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition both have 14 candidates.

And Ukip hopes to continue its gains at the last Assembly elections with 12 candidates. They are standing in Rumney, Llanrumney, Trowbridge and St Mellons, and Llanishen.

There are also eight Independent candidates.

Anyone who is not currently registered and wants to vote has until April 13 to register.

The elections will also see community councillors elected.

There are elections for community councils in Lisvane, Old St Mellons, Pentyrch, Radyr and Morganstown, St Fagans and Tongwynlais.

Councillors are not paid, but receive an allowance.

They have power over a number of areas including roads, litter, schools and leisure centres.
