Campaigner arrested after man hit by car to stand for election

-

A ROAD safety campaigner who was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent after a man was hit by a car is standing for election.

Former community councillor Ian Spiller, from Carn Wen, Broadlands in Bridgend, is one of two Welsh Liberal Democrat candidates for the Bryntirion, Laleston and Merthyr Mawr ward on Bridgend County Borough Council.

The nominations announced on Wednesday.

Mr Spiller remains on police bail. were

He had previously started a campaign calling for the A48 in Bridgend to be made safer, urging the council to cut the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph, following the tragic death of 16-year-old Rhys Rubery from Pencoed.

But he was arrested by police on suspicion of wounding with intent – which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment – after a man was hit by a car.

Police said the collision occurred in Ton Tylluan, Broadlands, at about 8pm on Saturday, February 11.

The 39-year-old was taken to hospital.

Yesterday, a police spokesman said a 36-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent is due to answer bail on April 10.

The Electoral Commission has confirmed the arrest does not disqualify Mr Spiller from standing for election.

Mr Spiller said: “I strongly deny the accusation made against me and I have not been charged with anything. I am confident the police report will find the same.

“I have worked tirelessly for my community for the past five years, including a successful campaign to stop the downgrading of the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend and the creation of the Broadlands Fun Day.”
