CARDIFF University remains Wales’ top university despite slipping one place in the latest UK rankings published today.

And, according to the Complete University Guide, the city has two universities in the Welsh top five with Cardiff Metropolitan University coming fourth.

Although it is best in Wales, Cardiff has fallen to 36th in the Complete University Guide main table, which this year ranks 129 UK universities.

Cardiff Metropolitan University has upped its Complete University Guide score for the third year and is now five positions higher than last year’s ranking at 67th place.

The University of South Wales has fallen 18 places finishing in 117th place.

A spokesman for Cardiff University welcomed the latest ranking.

He said: “It’s always pleasing to see us ranked as the best in Wales and amongst the UK’s very best.

“It’s especially pleasing we appear in the top 10 for 10 of the 46 subjects ranked and come out as the best in the UK for occupational therapy and optometry.

“However, we are not complacent and are committed to providing an educationally outstanding experience for all our students.

“That’s why we’re investing £260m in our teaching, learning and student experience and carrying out our biggest campus upgrade in a generation.”

President and vice-chancellor of Cardiff Met Professor Cara Aitchison said: “We are very pleased to see the continuation of our rise in the rankings in the Complete University Guide for the third consecutive year.

“This result reflects our high levels of graduate employment, research quality and student satisfaction – all of which are testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students alike.

“We are now entering an exciting new era at Cardiff Met as we build upon our successes with a new strategic plan and a new School of Technologies focussed on digital media and smart technology, data science and informatics and design technology and engineering; all areas that will meet increasing student demand and employer need.”
