Proud Barry set for title parade after terrific term

-

BARRY Town will proudly parade the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One title in their final game of their championship winning season against Ton Pentre at Jenner Park tomorrow.

Gavin Chesterfield’s team secured the title last weekend with a hard earned 1-0 away win at Cambrian and Clydach and will definitely look to finish their Welsh League existence with a win for their loyal band of supporters.

Barry have scored 15 goals with none against in their last three titledefining games and will go into the Welsh Premier League as deserved champions.

Penybont need one point from their final game of the season to secure the runners-up spot.

Boss Rhys Griffiths and his assistant ex-Cardiff City full-back Martyn Giles have done a tremendous job in their first season together in charge at Welsh League level and will want to finish with a win away at Taffs Well tomorrow.

The Wellmen could finish as high as sixth with a win in a season which has been topsy-turvy to say the least.

On their day they are a match for any team, but manager Lee Bridgeman will look for more consistency next season.

Goytre, from Pontypool, need a win to secure a top-three finish and they host Port Talbot Town.

Lee Relish’s team were at Christmas most people’s favourites to challenge Barry all the way, but their form over the finishing months has been up and down.

They will start next season as one of the favourites for the title, though.

Llanelli Town are the champions of Division Two and their talisman Lee Trundle finished as the league’s top scorer. The Reds from West Wales will look to make it a league and cup double when they play Bridgend Street from Division Three in the Nathaniel League Cup final at Briton Ferry next month.

A crowd of at least 1,000 are expected for what could be a decent final.

Briton Ferry will join Llanelli in Division One and Cwmamman United need six points from their last three games if they are to stop Pontypridd making it consecutive promotion seasons.

Dinas Powys host champions Llanelli at the Murch tomorrow.

The Third Division title is still not decided, but STM Sports and Llantwit Major have both left the rest of the field behind in the race for Division Two.

STM have scored 89 goals and whether they finish as champions or not they must be credited for their attacking style of play.

Llantwit can still edge past STM and their main strength has been in defence where they have only conceded 20 goals all season.

Llantwit are on the road tomorrow for their fourth game in seven days at Chepstow Town.

Treharris Athletic host Trethomas Bluebirds and Bridgend Street welcome Trefelin to the Willows.

It’s the JD Welsh Cup final on Sunday afternoon, where The New Saints will be seeking an unprecedented treble-treble.

The Oswestry-based club have already won the Welsh Premier by a landslide and defeated Barry Town 4-0 in the Nathaniel League Cup final.

Bala Town have the task of stopping Craig Harrison’s all-conquering New Saints.

Colin Caton’s team have already qualified for the Europa League by finishing third in the Welsh Premier, but have played TNS on 20 occasions and have never completed a victory over them.

Last week’s final game of the season saw Bala score four against the league champions only to concede six in a goal fest, anything of the same this Sunday should keep a four-figure crowd at the Bangor University Stadium happy and the match will be shown live on S4C with a 2pm kick-off with red button commentary available.
