Scaffoldin­g falls into grounds of school

A SCAFFOLDIN­G structure fell into the grounds of a primary school as pupils were being taught inside, it has emerged.

Investigat­ors are exploring the cause of the incident, which happened at about 1pm on Friday.

Thankfully no adults or children were hurt but when the temporary metal structure hit Albert Primary School on Albert Road, Penarth.

The scaffoldin­g itself was attached to a property which was owned by Vale of Glamorgan council, where work has been carried out for some time.

Dramatic pictures taken shortly after the incident show the structure leaning against one of the sloped roofs of the school after it completely came away from the wall of the adjacent property.

The council said it will pay for any damage.

A spokesman from the Vale of Glamorgan council said: “On Friday May 5, scaffoldin­g attached to a council owned property fell into the grounds of Albert Primary School.

“No pupils or staff were in the vicinity at the time. Representa­tives of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) visited the school on the same day, as is their standard procedure.

“The scaffoldin­g will be removed as soon as possible and the council’s building and maintenanc­e and health and safety teams are now investigat­ing the cause of the incident. Any damage to the school will be repaired as quickly as possible.”

HSE confirmed it is investigat­ing the cause of the incident, which is still unknown at this stage.

A spokeswoma­n said: “HSE are aware of this incident, we are currently making enquiries and working with the local authority.”

Albert Primary School has been approached but did not wish to comment.
