Champions League final security to affect those in city centre

A HUGE security operation will affect people living and working in Cardiff as the Champions League final comes to the city.

On June 3, European football fans will flock in their thousands to the city for one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

And whether attending the game or not, those living or working near the stadium will be affected by security measures in place.

There will be an inner secure zone which will be protected by police barriers and officers.

Exactly where that will be is not being announced for security reasons but no vehicles will be allowed in this zone.

If you work very close to the stadium and park at work, your vehicle access will be affected.

All businesses and residents who will be affected have, according to the council, been contacted and told how deliveries and things like cash collections can take place.

Residents living within that zone who have cars will be given alternative parking spaces.

During the men’s final on June 3, an area around the stadium will be subject to further stringent safety measures.

Only those with tickets for the game will be allowed in this area, but residents living on Westgate Street will be able to access their homes. They are told to carry identification and proof of address.

Pedestrian access for non-residents will be restricted on Westgate Street and Castle Street between Westgate Street and Cathedral Road from 5.45pm on June 3.

There will also be an outer secure zone.

This will be staffed by council officers and resident access will be maintained at all times.

All people living or working in those areas are told to carry identification and proof of address for the duration of the road closures.

There will be road closures in Cardiff Bay where the Champions Festival is being built across Roald Dahl Plass and right along to the Norwegian Church. A floating football pitch is also being built.

Residents who live in Cardiff Bay have also been contacted to ensure deliveries can be made and those that have a car and want to use it for the duration of the event are provided with alternative parking.

The only other area of the city where pedestrian access will be disrupted is between 5.45pm and 9.45pm on June 3 on Castle Street.

This will be between just west of Westgate Street to the junction with Cathedral Road.

Yesterday, the Champions League trophies completed their tour of Wales with a visit to Gareth Bales’ former school Whitchurch High.

It will be displayed in Cardiff Bay for the four days of the Uefa Champions Festival from June 1-4.

Last night, Juventus became the first finalists after beating Monaco and Atlético Madrid face Bale’s Real Madrid tonight for the second spot.
