Scouts enjoy their first camp

-

BEAVERS, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers had a bank holiday adventure, enjoying 40 different activities all planned and managed by a fabulous team of 65 adult volunteers.

The Scouts, from Barry and the Vale, didn’t need to go far to begin their adventure, camping in the local school grounds of St Cyres, Penarth. The camp was held so the youngsters (aged six to 18) could experience adventure outdoors away from home and to have lots of fun with their friends learning new and exciting skills.

The camp was attended by 250 youngsters from 1st Penmark, 1st Llantwit Major, 2nd/4th Barry, 5th Barry Sea Scouts and Beast Explorers, who all belong to Tir a Môr (Barry and Vale) Scout District.

Su Osbourne, lead volunteer for Beavers in Tir a Môr, said: “All the time and planning for this camp is worth it when you see the Beaver Scouts having so much fun. They really do gain so much confidence on weekends away.”

The weekend was action packed from the Friday night to the Monday afternoon where the youngsters took part in a range of activities including climbing, inflatables, laser tag, sumowrestling, archery, outdoor cooking, fire lighting, team sports, driving a car, go-carts, team games and crafts.

Julie Lewis, whose girls attend Scouting in Tir a Môr, said: “My girls are still buzzing about all their new experiences they’ve had at camp. Especially driving! Wow! Not many 10-year-olds get to try that.

“Thanks goes to all the leaders for giving up their time to do this with them”.

Creating opportunities for young people to develop social skills, independence and form friendships is central to scouting in Barry and the Vale, and has long-term positive impact on young people’s lives. Scouting is shaped by young people in partnership with adults and there is always a need for new volunteers.
