Sean’s the bream of the crop after a fine performanc­e on Kennet & Avon

SEAN Wilson, from Trethomas, turned in a fine performanc­e on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire when he was in the Cwmbran Angling Nobblers team in the latest round of the Sensas Spring League. He won the match with 21lb of bream caught on pole and worms and helped his team to second place on the day.

Newport angler Steve Hughes may have drawn peg 13 in the first of the New City Anglers Summer League matches at Lliswerry Pond but it was far from unlucky as he won the match with a new record for the pond. He float fished maggots and casters and caught six good bream and enough tench to give him a final tally of 69lb 11oz.

He was way ahead as Barry Greening claimed second place with just 11lb 7oz and John Henson came third with 9lb 1oz.

Cefn Fforest AC member Adam Jones won the latest Wednesday open at Redhill Fishery with a 110lb 5oz net of carp from peg 10 on Tilly’s Pond.

His club mate Dwayne Boyle finished second with 83lb 4oz and Adrian Davies third with 71lb 13oz.

Competitor­s from Cwmbran took all the Wednesday prize money in the Over-50s match at Cefn Mably Lakes.

Tony Hopkins has represente­d Wales in internatio­nal fly fishing and disabled coarse fishing teams and showed his class with a winning 83lb 4oz catch of carp.

Runner up Martin Challenger weighed in 63lb and Carlo Bertorelli was third with 62lb 4oz.

Roach and perch made up the weights at Festival Park Lake where Colin West won the Festival AC match with 12lb 7oz and was followed by two more Ebbw Vale anglers Dennis O’Leary and Alan Dempsey with 6lb 8oz and 6lb 1oz.

Phil Weaver, from Newport, is now 21 points ahead in the Sirhowy AS points table after winning again when the club fished the New Canal at White Springs.

He fished with pole tackle and casters and caught 113lb 14oz of carp and bream.

David Evans baited with luncheon meat and caught 102lb of carp for second place while fellow Tredegar angler Mike Yandle used pellet baits for his third best 45lb 2oz of carp.

Pole and pellet baits were responsibl­e for Cardiff member Robert Michael winning the Glamorgan AC match on the New Canal at White Springs with a 74lb 8oz catch of carp.

Second place went to John Cox with 52lb 4oz and third to Russell Palmer with 51lb 8oz.

The Gronow brothers from Cwmbran took the first prize money from two weekend opens.

Gareth netted carp to over 16lb as his pole and casters approach resulted in a 154lb total in the Saturday match at Mathern Mill and on Sunday Matthew won the Llanrumney match on Sophie’s Pond at Redhill Fishery with 93lb 8oz.

Ryan Whitehouse, with 116lb, was runner up at Mathern while Phil Weaver filled third place with 106lb.

At Redhill it was Adam brown in second place with 83lb and Karl Guerra third with 76lb 4oz.

The big carp fed on when Cefn Fforest AC visited Mathern Mill and fish well into double figures were in Bob Giles’s winning 160lb 12oz that beat Geoff Boycott with 133lb 6oz and Dwayne Boyle with 110lb 9oz.

Bream on swimfeeder and maggots made up Barry Williams’s winning 28lb 10oz when Iffers AC fished at Hartleton Lake. Runner up Keith Hull put 22lb 14oz on the scales while Den-
