Last day of trading for restaurant

-

A POPULAR bar and restaurant based in a historic Cardiff venue will close down because the business is “not financially viable”.

Locke & Remedy, which is at the former site of the Old Library in Cardiff city centre, is closing after 18 months in business.

Its last day of trading will be today, it has been confirmed, while it’s understood the venue will no longer be used as a bar or restaurant after almost 20 years of serving food and drink.

Staff wanted to thank customers who had supported the venture since it opened in 2015, saying they hoped they had “created memories at special events which will live forever”.

Locke & Remedy shares the Grade II-listed Old Library building, in Trinity Street, with the Cardiff Story Museum.

The bar and restaurant became popular for its “adventurous” burgers, sourdough pizzas, cocktails and craft beers.

Harry Taylor, general manager, said: “We are touched to see the response to our closure on social media.

“Locke & Remedy took over a site with a haunted past as many different concepts have been tried and failed in the same venue.

“We have given it our best shot and created a venue which was loved by many in Cardiff. Unfortunately, despite large growth in our second year trading, the business is not financially viable and the lease to our part of the building has been sold.

“I would like to say a massive thank you on behalf of all of the staff here at Locke & Remedy for your custom and support over the last 18 months.

“We hope we have created memories at special events which will live forever for the people who experienced them.

“The bar was just as fun from a worker’s point of view as a customer’s and this gives great credit to the vibe that this bar had.”

The closure news struck a chord with some of the venue’s satisfied customers.

Food blogger HungryCityHippy posted on Twitter: “Just heard some gutting news. The gorgeous @LockeandRemedy is closing down & their last day in the biz is this Saturday. Will be such loss.”

Blogger ThePlateLickedClean added: “That’s such a disappointment. They did what they did so well.”

Luke Hinton wrote: “So true. Best cocktail by a country mile”.

JSquared wrote: “Sad to hear one of our favourite haunts @Lockeand Remedy is closing its doors for good this Saturday. They’ll be seriously missed”.

News that Locke & Remedy would be moving into the historic and prominent venue near The Hayes was announced in July 2015.
