ALDI EYES UP NEW CITY SITE

-

A NEW Aldi could be opening in Cardiff – and residents are being asked to have their say.

The plan is for a new store to be built on a piece of vacant land off Caerphilly Road.

The land used to be home to a Texaco petrol station and the Electrocoin factory, which produced amusement arcade machines.

There were complaints the land was “dangerous” with derelict buildings and weeds growing.

In January, independent Heath Councillor Fenella Bowden raised concerns and called for the council to step in to secure the site.

On its website, the discount retailer says it would create a “highquality” food store. The plans would include 125 parking spaces, including four for disabled drivers and 10 for parents.

It would see 60 new jobs created in the store and others during construction.

The company says creating a store in the location would “reduce the need for customers to travel further afield”.

“A store at this location would help to keep spending local and allow residents to carry out their food shopping without travelling out of the area,” it reads.

But Coun Bowden has raised concerns about access. She said traffic on Caerphilly Road is already at a maximum and adding a supermarket will cause more issues.

She said: “There is a huge issue in relation to access and how that is going to work.

“It’s not only motor vehicles but it’s going to mean delivery vehicles too. How are they going to get deliveries to it without having to go through a residential area?”

A consultation event is being held on Friday, June 16, at St Andrews Methodist Church Hall, Caerphilly Road between 2pm and 6pm.
