Dad lost control of his motorbike before hitting car

-

A DAD of two died after he lost control of his motorbike, veered across a road and crashed into a parked car, an inquest heard yesterday.

Leigh Postans, 28, was riding his motorbike along Llanrumney Avenue in Cardiff on February 22 just before 1pm and collided with a Ford Fusion parked on a curb.

The court heard how witnesses described hearing a “loud bang” after seeing him race down the road “at speed” before the incident.

Mr Postans veered across the road, for unknown reasons, and lost control of his 300CC motorbike and crashed into the stationary car, Cardiff Coroner’s Court heard.

Although it could not be determined how fast he was travelling before the accident, the court heard that he was “in excess of the speed limit” as he had “travelled fast enough to move the car” more than a metre.

One witness also described seeing him “doing a wheelie” before the accident, although the court was told by PC Smith from the Forensic Collision Investigations Unit that, at the time of the impact, he was on two wheels.

PC Smith also said that prior to the accident, Mr Postans had been travelling on the footpath as the car he crashed into was half on the curb, adding he may have been affected by the wet driving conditions as his visor was up, suggesting he may have had rain in his eyes, which could have reduced visibility.

Coroner Phillip Spinney recorded a verdict of accidental death and said Mr Postans had died from mutiple traumas caused by the crash.

He was also found to have used cannabis prior to his death – although it cannot be determined how soon before the accident – which may have affected his driving, the inquest was told.

Mr Postans was a father of two and his father Alan paid tribute to his son in a statement read out in court.

In it, he said his son was a “happy go lucky child” who was “always cracking jokes” and “from a young age was always into bikes”.

He added that the red motorbike involved in the crash was going to be sold after being in the garage for months.

In a tribute just after the accident, his family said: “He is loved, and will be missed very much by all of his family. Leigh was a father of two and sadly will not see them grow up.”
