How they rated

-

STUART HOGG

A tough opening. Spilled a ball on the deck, was knocked over by Sam Vaka, put a foot in touch as he fielded a kick, bombed one try with a poor pass to Watson and was then brought down just short himself.

ANTHONY WATSON

Looked set for a run-in around the half-hour mark, but Hogg’s misdirected pass left him having to stoop low, checking his momentum. Wasn’t to be denied after the break, though, producing a fine finish as he twisted and turned his way over.

JONATHAN JOSEPH

Just denied a try on the stroke of half-time when he was held up over the line. Showed some good hands and looked to get involved, without really being able to break free.

BEN TE’O

The strongest carrier in the Lions back line and caught the eye as he made inroads with his direct approach on his return to the land of his birth, making the most metres (87) for his team.

TOMMY SEYMOUR

Had his hands full in defence up against the lively Vaka and wasn’t able to make that much headway in attack, either out wide or when coming into midfield taking inside balls off 10, but did put in a really crucial try-saving tackle.

JOHNNY SEXTON

Handed first go in the battle for the Test No.10 jersey but didn’t advance his cause, with one seriously overcooked cross kick summing up an inaccurate display. Came off after taking a bump.

GREIG LAIDLAW

Having not been in the original squad, found himself starting the first match and was put under pressure at the base of the rucks in the early exchanges. Landed a penalty before swapping places with Rhys Webb.

JOE MARLER

Put in a crucial piece of work in defence early on and the Harlequins loosehead was part of a strong scrummage. Left the field amid a complete change of the the front row around the 50-minute mark.

RORY BEST

A solid, if truncated start to the tour for the vastly-experienced Ulsterman. Put in seven carries and made 11 tackles during his 48 minutes on the pitch, while also hit his men at what lineouts there were.

KYLE SINCKLER

Showed up really well with his handling, only to blot the copy book with his last act, taking a quick tap of a kickable penalty that ended with him being pinged for not releasing.

ALUN WYN JONES

On just his second outing in 10 weeks following the shoulder injury he sustained in the Six Nations, he was welcomed back by a huge hit from Andrew Makalio. Got through the full 80 minutes.

IAIN HENDERSON

Made an error-strewn opening to his Lions career, giving away a penalty under the posts and then being unable to stop Sam Anderson-Heather, who drove through him to the line. Replaced by George Kruis.

ROSS MORIARTY

A surging carry almost led to a try for Hogg in the first half and another after the break was capped by end product as his charge laid the platform for Watson touching down.

TAULUPE FALETAU

The pick of the Lions in the first-half, putting in a superb try-saving tackle on Inga Finau. Generally carried on where he had left off for Bath in the final weeks of the season, with 11 carries and 14 tackles.

SAM WARBURTON (C)

Playing his first game after close on two months out, it was noticeable that he took on a significant carrying role, with seven forays upfield, and he will have been pleased to have got 66 minutes under his belt.
