THREE INJURED IN CEMETERY ‘STABBING’
ARMED POLICE SCRAMBLED TO REPORTS OF STABBING AT CARDIFF GRAVEYARD, WHICH SAW THREE PEOPLE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
THREE people have been taken to hospital following a reported stabbing at a cemetery in Cardiff.
Armed police and paramedics were called to Western Cemetery in the Ely area of the Welsh capital yesterday afternoon.
The Welsh Ambulance service said three people were taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-serious injuries.
A spokesman said two of them were taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, while another needed treatment at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant.
It is thought the fight was between two groups known to one another.
A spokesman said: “At approximately 12.30pm, officers were called to Western Cemetery to reports of a disturbance between a group of individuals who are believed to be known to each other.
“Police units attended, including firearms officers as a precautionary measure, and order was restored at the location which was then monitored by officers.”
The reported stabbing was then followed just hours later by a second “disturbance” outside the British Legion on Cowbridge Road West.
The police spokesman said a “scene” was also established near Fairwater police station, but no additional details were disclosed.
The force said each of the three incidents are linked.
As a result, officers are increasing visibility patrols to reassure the local community.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Debbie Brown said: “There has been lots of police activity in the area which would have concerned people but I would like to reassure them that a full investigation is underway.
“Much of what has taken place has been in full view of the public so I would urge people to come forward.”
A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Trust said: “We were called at approximately 12.45pm to reports of an incident at Western Cemetery, Ely, Cardiff.
“Three paramedics in rapid response cars, two crews in emergency ambulances and members of the Hazardous Area Response Team are at the scene.”
South Wales Police directed traffic on either side of Cowbridge Road West, just after the Culverhouse Cross roundabout, following the incident.
One eye witness reported seeing about 30 unarmed and armed officers locked off the cemetery and said: “A lot of them in combat helmets and clothing.”
