Man, 20, arrested in subway attack probe
.................................... .................... .................................... .............................. .................... A MAN has been arrested in connection with a suspected sexual assault in a Cardiff subway, police have confirmed.
The 20-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon and was put in police custody.
The subway, which connects Kingsway and North Road, was closed by South Wales Police for almost eight hours while they investigated the incident.
Officers said the sexual assault was alleged to have happened in the early hours of yesterday in the underpass beneath North Road.
Police tape was put in place at both entrances of the subway from around 8.30am and a police car blocked the North Road entrance for several hours.
At one point, three officers were stood either side of the subway to ensure pedestrians didn’t enter.
A spokesman for the force said: “Police investigating a sexual assault which is believed to have occurred in the subway connecting Kingsway and North Road in Cardiff city centre, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 6, 2017, have arrested a man in connection with the incident.
“The 20-year-old man from Splott was arrested this afternoon and is currently in police custody.”
Following their investigation, the subway was reopened at around 4.30pm.
The subway is a popular route in and out of the city centre.
The police spokesman added: “Anybody who has information about the incident is urged to contact South Wales Police via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference *216491.”
