TEMPERATURES are set to rise even higher today after a weekend which saw South Wales basking in sizzling sunshine.

Today is expected to be even warmer with temperatures pushing up into the early 30°Cs.

Cardiff is set to be the warmest place in Wales for the second day in a row after temperatures hit 29°C yesterday, but thunder is possible across the country in the late afternoon and early evening.

People were keen to maximise the amazing weather over the weekend and descended on beaches like Barry Island in their droves.

Beach-goers made the most of summer-like conditions with by playing ball games and building sand castles.

Some people spent their Sunday a little more actively by taking part in the Caerphilly 10k.

Set in the shadow of the Caerphilly Castle, the Bryn Meadows Caerphilly 10k started and finished on Crescent Road and saw 2,300 runners taking part.

Residents came out in force to help cool them off with garden hoses as they battled on in the boiling hot sun.

On Saturday, the 160th Infantry Brigade and Headquarters Wales put on a free Military Festival of Music in Cardiff Bay. The event followed the Royal Gun Salute outside the Pierhead Building to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday.

Hundreds of people watched on as feast of musical treats was played out at Roald Dahl Plass with The Band of the Prince of Wales Division, The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of The Royal Welsh and the Army Medical Services Band all in fine form. Brigadier Alan Richmond, head of the Army in Wales, said it was a “fantastic” occasion.

“We had the weather and some very talented Army musicians on show and you got a real sense of the public enjoying themselves,” he said.

“A lot of hard work goes into organising this event and we’re already looking forward to next year.”

The Met Office warned there would be high UV and pollen counts today. Met Office forecaster Charles Powell said: “We have seen the hottest day of the year so far.

"Monday will see repeat performances, with a lot of England and Wales seeing dry, sunny, warm, humid weather with high UV, high pollen.

“The temperature though is creeping up a little bit day on day, so we will probably see 33°C on Monday, probably in similar sort of areas – south-east England, Greater London.”
