SUPERSTAR singer Ed Sheeran has announced that he will keep his promise to perform in Cardiff next year.

The Galway Girl singer, who closed the Glastonbury Festival at the weekend, will play the Principality Stadium on June 22.

Back in January Sheeran told Nation Radio he would visit the Welsh capital in 2018.

At the time he said: “I am literally just touring all year. I start in a couple of months and I finish at the end of 2018.

“If you’re a fan and you’d like to come to a gig I am going to be playing everywhere. I am definitely playing in Cardiff but not this year. I think it’s next year,” he told presenter Carl Hughes.

“I haven’t played Cardiff because there’s a small arena and then the Principality Stadium. There’s not a venue between them. It’s quite difficult to play in Wales.”

There was also speculation yesterday that grime star Stormzy will be supporting Sheeran at his show in Cardiff after he posted a cryptic tweet.

He took to Twitter at 4am to post the Welsh word “hiraeth” to his 731,000 followers.

Hiraeth, which has no direct English translation, roughly means a feeling of longing, or yearning for home, but the tweet could have a hidden meaning.

Stormzy, who comes from Croydon, may well be dropping a hint that he’s supporting Ed Sheeran if there’s a Wales leg of his new tour – as the grime star has previously performed with the Shape of You singer.

The grime artist, who started making music in 2010, has helped push the genre into the mainstream in recent years with songs like Shut Up, Know Me From and Scary, and his album Gang Signs & Prayer reached number one in the album charts.

He also performed on the Grenfell Tower charity single, Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Sheeran’s tour will take him to Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and London before his performance in the Welsh capital.

Tickets will go on sale at Ticketmaster and See Tickets from 10am on Saturday, July 8.
