POLICE are investigating a “serious assault” in Cardiff that left a man in hospital.

Theodora Street in Adamsdown was cordoned off yesterday after people living in the street said there was an altercation involving “multiple men” at around 3.30am.

There were also yellow evidence markers running down the middle of the road, where blood was clearly visible.

Parts of adjoining Broadway were also closed off by Ladbrokes and Basilco pizza takeaway with what appeared to be blood and clothing nearby.

Officers said they are investigating the possibility of a knife used in the disturbance.

Forensics teams were seen gathering evidence from the scene for several hours before the road reopened yesterday afternoon.

Residents on the street reported being woken at 3.15am to shouts of “where is your boy?” and “I’m going to slice him up”.

Carl Smith, 40, said: “There’s still blood down the street, it’s pretty traumatic.

“I’m glad I didn’t hear what I heard in the reports, it’s usually a quiet street.

“There’s lots of families around here – a big family next door has just moved out. I’m glad they weren’t around for it.”

Aaron Gillet, 41, added: “I’ve lived here four years and I walk through every day and I’ve never had any trouble. It’s just horrible.”

Councillor for Adamsdown Nigel Howells said residents have been left worried by the incident.

He said: “Residents are shaken and are obviously very anxious. They want to know what’s happened.

“A couple of residents were disturbed through the night and heard what was going on but for many the first they knew of it was the police.

“We have had some anti-social behaviour but nothing on this scale, it’s quite startling that something like this can happen.”

Coun Howells praised the street for its community spirit, with many long-term elderly tenants and young families.

Labour Adamsdown councillor Owen Jones described the incident as “tragic”.

The Labour councillor said: “It’s a huge pity that something like this has happened on the night the city was showing itself off to host Coldplay.”

Police said a 36-year-old man remained at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff yesterday. No arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “An investigation is under way and anybody who may have seen or heard anything suspicious is urged to contact South Wales Police via 101 quoting reference *271618 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The Welsh Ambulance Trust reported that three vehicles attended the incident.

A spokesman said: “We were called at shortly before 3.40am this morning to reports of an incident on Broadway, Cardiff.

“We sent a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle and two crews in emergency ambulances and a man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales.”
