New coffee kiosk for ‘gateway’ into Cardiff

-

A COFFEE kiosk on the way into Cardiff city centre could be about to get a new look.

The kiosk, on Newport Road, under the railway bridge near Queen Street station, would be brought back to life under new plans.

The existing kiosk will be demolished and a new unit built in its place.

Coffee Planet Ltd are behind the plans. They are described in planning documents as “a new UK franchise operator of ‘pod’ coffee shops and cafes, equating for takeout and sit-in capacities”.

The site has permission to be a newsagent but acted as a small cafe with takeaway capacity for sandwiches and coffee.

The new plans would see it set up as a permanent coffee shop.

The application says that the existing premises will be demolished, primarily because they are too low and the building fabric is of low quality. The rear wall will be pushed back and the building will be made longer but will not go into the pavement.

The plan is to make a simple, low black box with a large window looking on to the street.

It would have both takeaway and eat-in space.

The layout is described as being a rectangle with a coffee bar/servery at one short end and a queue space, with the rest being seating space.

It is divided into three unequal-size spaces.

The company say their plans will improve the space.

“The site lies in Cardiff city core and on one of the busiest connector footpaths in the city centre serving from the city centre, Knox Court, all the commercial uses on Newport Road, Cardiff prison and a host of other city centre uses proximal to the main shopping district.

“Newport Road is a key city gateway and this little new building will improve this approach”.

The plans have this week been approved by Cardiff council.
