Torrential rain brings flooding and travel disruption

HEAVY rainfall across South Wales has caused flooding and disruption to travel, with emergency services called to homes.

Nearly 20mm of rain fell during 24 hours in Cardiff yesterday, with a yellow weather warning for winds of up to 50mph until 7pm.

Emergency services were called to Bridgend on to rescue a car stuck in flood water due to heavy rain and wind.

Two passengers were able to escape on Heronston Lane before crews arrived at 1.25pm.

Properties across South Wales were also affected, as emergency services in Tonypandy attended a commercial property with a flooded basement in Hannah Street in Porth.

Warnings were issued to homes on Shakespear­e Rise in Rhydyfelin, Pontypridd, at 3pm although no appliances attended the scene.

In Barry Island transport was interrupte­d as water swept across one of the island’s main access roads.

South Wales Police said Welsh Water were called to Harbour Road after reports of a burst water main caused by the weather.

Jennie Griffiths, Head of joint fire control for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: “We received a report of flooding up to the bumper of cars on Harbour Road, in Barry Island, just before 3.30pm.”

Cars had to go through high levels of water before the road was shut at both ends at 4.24pm between Station Approach Road and St Nicholas’ Road.

James Obsorne, owner of Coastal Coffee, said: “The whole road was flooded quite badly.

“I think a drain must have come up under the pressure.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen it like this for at least 12 months.”

Cardiff Bus services between Barry Island and the University Hospital of Wales were cancelled during the evening before resuming services to avoid Broad Street.

As rain swept the country, Tredegar in Bleanau Gwent received the most with a total of 67.6mm within 24 hours.

Services across the Valleys in Rhondda Cynon Taff were also closed due to flooding, as Abercynon sports hall and swimming pool was forced to shut.

A council spokeswoma­n said: “The pool and the hall are shut but the gym and the remain open. Staff are on site.

“If any customers have questions they should call 01443 740 141.”

Saturday’s family fun event at Ynysanghar­ad Park in Pontypridd has also been cancelled due to the bad weather.

Further rain is predicted throughout today before mixed cloud and sunshine tomorrow.
