Pupils raise £1,100 for charity over 36 hours

STUDENTS at Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales High School, Cardiff, have raised more than £1,100 for charity during a marathon 36-hour fundraiser.

Highlights included a 36-hour live radio broadcast from the school radio station hosted by event organiser and Year 13 pupil Seb Cheer.

Other highlights included Sophie Lewis, 16, drinking 36 cups of tea at cafes and shops across Cardiff in 36 hours.

A penalty shoot-out with pupils trying to get goals past staff was also held.

All money raised will be divided between Mind, Stonewall Cymru and children’s bowel and bladder charity Eric.

Headteacher Marc Belli said he was “incredibly proud” of all the students who took part and ran the event.

He added: “They showed great stamina, enthusiasm and skill. Money raised will help make a difference to a number of people through the chosen charities.”

Seb, who is going on to study journalism at Leeds University, said organising the event and running the radio show was something he would never forget. He added: “I’ve loved my seven years in this school, and this was a great way to go out with a bang. When I was doing the 36-hour live show at the end I couldn’t wait for it to end but also wanted it to go on forever. It was a dream come true doing this.”

Year 12 pupil Sophie said she had had enough caffeine for a while.

She added: “The event was a ball. My role consisted of prancing round Cardiff drinking lots and lots of tea, so it really was an enjoyable experience. I really saw the best of Cardiff and came face to face with generosity.”

Jack Vaughan, 16, who worked on the broadcast as a newsreader, reporter and photographer said: “It was a great experience and it was great to be able to raise so much money for the three charities.”
