Rappers GLC pulled from Pride line-up

-

WELSH rappers Goldie Lookin’ Chain have been pulled from the line-up for Pride Cymru 2017.

It comes just 24 hours after they were confirmed for the bill.

The Newport collective, who have penned odes to Splott in the Welsh capital and Fidget Spinners, were to be part of the annual event, which this year sees the return of Big Weekend in Cardiff.

A statement from Pride Cyrmu said: “The Pride Cymru Board and its volunteers would like to announce the cancellation of Goldie Lookin’ Chain’s scheduled appearance at Pride Cymru’s Big weekend on Friday, August 25.

“Since announcing the act, we have received feedback from the public regarding the appropriateness of this booking and want to listen to these concerns and act upon them.

“We are deeply troubled at the thought that any members of our community might be left upset by one of our acts, especially during a time when they should be feeling most celebratory and proud, and so would like to take this opportunity to apologise for this misjudgment.

“The board would like to thank all those who brought this to our attention; it’s clear we have an empassioned community of people looking forward to enjoying their Pride Cymru to the fullest, of which we are very grateful.

“More information on the amended Friday night line-up will follow, and once again, thank you to everyone for their support around this year’s event.”

It’s understood the controversy stems from GLC’s song Your Mother’s Got a P **** , which has been viewed by some in the LGBTQ+ community as transphobic.

Organisers revealed the initial line-up for Pride Cymru back in May, which includes opening night headliners Fun Lovin’ Criminals (who were to be supported by GLC), Charlotte Church, Rod Thomas (aka Bright Light, Bright Light) and Zervas and Pepper.

After wrangling with Cardiff council, Pride Cymru is unable to use its usual home at Coopers Field and is instead taking over the streets around City Hall.

The event is combining with the hugely popular Big Weekend returning for the first time since 2011 and will take place over three days from August 25 to 27.

It means that ticket prices have dropped to £2 for standard entry and children under 12 can go free.
