Clearing proved the best option for Callum

-

THINKING of applying through clearing? Look no further than Cardiff University. If you would like the chance to study at a successful, vibrant and cosmopolitan university with a reputation for high-quality teaching and research, then Cardiff University has a great deal to offer.

Callum, a current student, shares his experience at Cardiff after he got in through clearing…

Why did you choose Cardiff University? I chose Cardiff University because it ranked 5th in the REF (Research Excellence Framework) and it is a Russell Group university, meaning it is one of the best universities in the country for research.

As the degree I wanted to study was neuroscience, I couldn’t miss out on the chance to be taught by world-leading academics in a globally-recognised university.

On a personal level, having lived in the valleys all my life I did want to stay close to home but go far enough to have my own freedom and Cardiff was the most suitable option to achieve that. What were your first impressions when you first visited the university? I had been to Cardiff University a few times so I had a small idea of what to expect, but had no idea what it would be like to live and study there every day. When I first saw the university, I couldn’t believe how nice the buildings were and how friendly everyone was. Having been here for some time now, my first impressions have been proven to be totally correct.

What do you get involved in? I am heavily involved in student voice and volunteering. For the last two years I have been an academic representative, which gives me the chance to raise any issues that students face here with academic staff.

I am also a co-president of the sexual health student-led service, which provides sexual health information to the whole Cardiff University student cohort.

I have recently completed the Cardiff University employability award which has helped me develop and enhance my soft skills like commercial awareness, teamwork, communication, numeracy, literacy and problem solving to make me more employable to future employers when I graduate or look for post-graduate study.

What would you say to students considering Cardiff? Cardiff University is a spectacular university in an extraordinary city. The city was recently named the cheapest city in the UK to live in so it means your money will last longer, which will be very useful as a student.

Living so close to the city means you save money on travel as well, so students here have much more to spend on the amazing social life in Cardiff! Sum up Cardiff University in three words… Innovative, inclusive, incredible.
