City chippy in running for best in UK crown

-

A CHIPPY from Cardiff is in the running to be crowned the country’s best fish and chip shop.

The Posh Fish & Chip Company in Llantrisant Road is one of six from Wales competing with others from throughout the UK as part of the 30th anniversary National Fish & Chip Awards.

And The Crispy Cod from Rhondda is in the running twice as two of its shops – one in Porth and one in Gelli – impressed the judges.

They are joined by Penaluna’s in Aberdare and fish and chip shops in Machynlleth and Fishguard.

The Posh Fish & Chip Company is based at Llantrisant Road Retail Park and has been praised by customers for everything from its friendly service to delicious fishy bites.

Meanwhile, The Crispy Cod opened in 2008 and has become renowned for its dedication to the sustainability of fisheries worldwide and it has already amassed awards.

And while the awards may be for chippies, among the delights served up at Penaluna’s are afternoon teas.

Widely recognised as the Oscars of the fish and chip industry, the shortlisted fish and chip shops represent the best in the business and will now compete to become the number one fish and chip shop in the UK.

Over the coming weeks the shops – a total of 60 from 10 regions – will be whittled down to a top 20, then top 10, before the final stage of judging in London in January.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive at Seafish, which has organised the contest, said: “This award showcases the best of the best, the local fish and chip shops that we all love to eat from.

“The calibre of shops in this year’s top 60 is outstanding – they are a true representation of our industry and sum up perfectly why British fish and chips are, and will always be, the best in the world.”
