Thousands to run the Cardiff 10k on Sunday

CARDIFF will see more than 8,000 athletes, amateur runners and dedicated fundraisers take to the streets this weekend after entries for this year’s Cardiff 10K hit an all-time high.

Organised by Kidney Wales, the event on Sunday is known for its scenic city centre route and attracts thousands of runners from across the country every year, with 32% choosing to fundraise for race organisers.

Registration for the city’s road race – which is celebrating its 32nd anniversary this year – has now closed.

In a change from the well-known route of previous years, which saw runners race through the historic grounds of Bute Park and Cardiff Castle, this year’s course will take runners on a trip to the east of the city, with scenic highlights including National Museum Wales, Cardiff University and Roath Park.

With minimal inclines, the new route offers runners a fast-paced route through some of the city’s greenest spaces.

As well as the main event, families and young runners can take part in the Family 2K race before the main event.

Registrations for the 2K are now sold out, with more than 1,000 entrants confirmed.

Roy Thomas, chief executive of Kidney Wales, said: “The Cardiff 10K is a truly great race and one of the best in the UK and the largest in Wales.

“Over the last 30 years the event has raised an incredible amount of money for charities all over Wales and of course we are hoping that this year will be no different.

“Once again we have reached, and in fact exceeded, our target number of runners. We have no doubt that in the next couple of years the popularity of the race will continue to grow and grow and we hope that in the not too distant future we will be able to reach over 10,000 runners.

“We wish everyone success in running this year’s race and we will be cheering you on every step of the way.”
