City centre pub to close its doors this month

A CARDIFF city centre pub has confirmed it will close this month.

The Crockerton on Greyfriars Road said it has been “a crazy journey” but it will be closing their doors on September 27.

It added that staff members will be offered positions at other Wetherspoon pubs in the area.

It said in a Facebook post: “So the rumours are true. We are sad to say that we will be closing our doors...

“But there’s still plenty of time to visit and party as you always have.

“It’s been a crazy journey and we’re honoured to have shared it with you. Keep your eyes peeled for special offers and there may even be some vouchers for all those special customers who’ve made The Crockerton one of Cardiff’s finest venues.

“All is not lost, you’ll see our wonderful staff dotted around the many other Wetherspoons across town. A sincere thanks for all the memories and here’s to the next chapter.

“Diolch Cardiff you’ve been incredible.”

Wetherspoon said it will hand the property back to the landlord on September 28.

Amy McConnell posted on the Facebook page: “Absolutely gutted! My husband and I met here back in 2008 and always come in for our anniversary, it’s always been our tradition with Lloyds being an iconic part of Cardiff. Its the one pub everyone knows of. Good luck to all the staff.”

Angela Gold said: “This shouldn’t be allowed to happen. Where am I going to watch the rugby now. Every Six Nations since you opened we’ve sat in the same place on match day. I’m devastated.”

A spokesman for the JD Wetherspoon chain said: “Wetherspoon is to hand the property back to the landlord on September 28. So The Crockerton’s last day of trading as a Wetherspoon pub will be Wednesday, September 27.”

Queen Street and the area around this pub was known as Crockherbtown, or Crockerton, until 1887 and the pub’s name pays tribute to that.

Crockherbtown Lane which runs parallel with Greyfriars Road, where the pub is situated, can still be seen today.

It comes after the news at the turn of the year that the pub chain is selling Central Bar.

The pub, on Windsor Place off Queen Street in the city centre, has continued to remain open and trade as a Wetherspoon venue and will do so until the pub is sold.

It is being marketed to other pub operators so is expected to continue as a pub after it is sold, although that is not guaranteed.
