BLUEBIRDS PRIZE GUYS’ DELIGHT AT PICKING UP ACCOLADE But what happened to last pair of Cardiff City award-winners?

-

NEIL Warnock and Nathaniel MendezLaing toasted Cardiff City’s fine start to the 2017-18 Championship campaign by scooping the Manager of the Month and Player of the Month awards respectively for August.

And, in doing so, they became the first manager and player at Cardiff to take the awards in the same month for almost seven years.

The last Cardiff star to receive the player award was Fraizer Campbell who took the gong in February 2013.

And the most recent Cardiff manager to scoop the award was Malky Mackay, but that was way back in November 2011 when the Bluebirds won four of their five league matches as part of a nine-game unbeaten run.

But you have to cast your mind way back to October 2010 for the last time Cardiff earned both the best player and manager awards in the same month.

Dave Jones had guided Cardiff to a maximum haul of 15 points from their five games as the Bluebirds defeated Barnsley, Severnside rivals Bristol City, Coventry, Leeds and Norwich to claim a 100% record in the month of October 2010.

And forward Jay Bothroyd was the player who bagged the player’s award having netted five goals in those fixtures. But whatever became of Jones and Bothroyd after their awards? We took a closer look...

Jay Bothroyd

Bothroyd really hit top form in the 2010-11 campaign and scored eight goals in six matches, a run that helped him scoop the Player of the Month award for October.

His stunning form earned him an international call-up, with the striker winning his first England cap in the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to France at Wembley in November 2010.

But just five goals and six months later, Bothroyd was packing his bags as he left the Welsh capital following Cardiff’s 3-0 aggregate loss to Reading in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

Bothroyd joined Neil Warnock’s Queens Park Rangers during the 2011 summer transfer window after the Rs had gained promotion into the Premier League under Cardiff’s current boss.

Goals proved difficult to come by, and – after a brief loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday – Bothroyd decided his future was away from the UK. He made the surprise move to Thai outfit Muangthong United before joining Japanese side Jubilo Iwata and then Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo.

Dave Jones

After guiding the Bluebirds to the FA Cup final in 2008, Jones finally looked like cracking the code as Cardiff challenged at the top end of the Championship for the entirety of the 2010-11 campaign. But, as with Bothroyd, Jones moved on following the Bluebirds’ loss to the Royals in the play-offs. After six years in the Welsh capital, Jones had a spell out of the game before taking over at Sheffield Wednesday in March 2012 following the departure of Gary Megson. It all soon went horribly wrong for Jones who was axed little more than 18 months later. Latterly, he was at Hartlepool, but lost his job last term.
