Choir joins thousands for weekend memory walks

-

ONLY Men Aloud joined thousands of people to unite against dementia as part of the Cardiff Day Memory Walk yesterday.

The famed choir performed an uplifting version of John Farnham’s hit You’re the Voice which help invigorate a large but damp crowd ahead of their 4k and 10k Memory Walks.

Memory Walk aims to raise £9m nationally this year and bring together more than 110,000 walkers across the generations.

Craig Yates, member of Only Men Aloud, cut the ribbon to start Alzheimer’s Society’s Cardiff Day Memory Walk at Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff Bay accompanied by the rest of the choral group.

Craig said: “The Memory Walk has been amazing, uniting with people living with dementia and sharing experiences has been truly inspirational and humbling.

“Myself and many members of the group have been directly affected by dementia within our close families, and we want to do as much as we can to help raise awareness and much needed funds to support people who are affected by the condition.

“Taking part in Memory Walk has been uplifting and moving.

“Thanks to everyone who joined us today, united against dementia.”

Sue Phelps, director of Alzheimer’s society Cymru said: “Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer.

“I am so glad that people from right across Wales stepped out in their thousands to improve the lives of people living with dementia.

“Every pound raised will help Alzheimer’s Society provide information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by dementia.

“As a Society we are committed to spending at least £150m over the next decade on dementia research to improve care for people today and find a cure for tomorrow.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this Cardiff Memory Walk such a success, once again.

“It was fantastic to see the commitment of all the walkers even in the rain!”
