It’s a Green and pleasant land for Howard after big catch in Devon

PONTLLANFR­AITH tackle shop owner Howard Green had a good week that started in North Devon where he was partnered with Alan Davies, from Trealaw, in the two day pairs match at Stafford Moor Fishery. He won his section both days and the duo finished as runners up, missing victory by just one point.

The weather was so bad that pole fishing was impossible in the next day’s individual match but Howard legered pellet baits and landed carp to double figures to win with a total of 186lb.

Fresh back from the mid-week successes he headed for Redhill Fishery and Penny’s Pond where he clocked up another win in the Cefn Fforest AC match by catching 128lb of carp to just edge ahead of Ryan Thomas with 126lb and Adam Jones with 124lb.

Rain chilled the water and cut catches for competitor­s in the second match in the Newport Autumn Series at School Pool; but that didn’t stop Dailis Schneider, from Newport, adding another win to this year’s collection when he pole fished worms at peg 60 in the back bay and caught 45lb 8oz of carp. .

Nick Jones, from Pontypool and on peg 59, was runner up 37lb 4oz on feeder tackle while on peg 61 Bargoed angler Chris Murphy caught 25lb 12oz for third place ahead of Rob Sims fourth with 24lb 10oz.

The third round is on Sunday, October 8 at Woodstock Pond.

The Wednesday match at White Springs was pegged on the Match Lake and won by Chris Wells with a mixture of carp and bream that added up to 127lb 6oz followed by Andrew Wray with 94lb 14oz and Andy Kirtley with 62lb.

Tilly’s Pond at Redhill Fishery is closed for improvemen­t work so the regular Wednesday fixture was on Penny’s Pond.

The day was another success for Tredegar angler Mike Yandle who pole fished pellets in the margins to catch 173lb 3oz of carp.

Brian King, from Ebbw Vale, was straight across the water and second with 141lb and John Macklin third with 85lb 3oz.

Bill Gronow, from Cwmbran, won again in the Wednesday match for the over-50s at Cefn Mably Lakes when he legered pellets and caught 96lb of carp.

Another regular winner from Cwmbran Martin Challenger was runner up with 83lb 8oz; Doug Hornblow, from Tonypandy, was third with 79lb and Cardiff Nomads member Mike Martin Davies collected the silver fish pool.

Bill Gronow’s sons stole the show at the weekend in the Llanrumney AC match at Cefn Mably Lakes.

Matthew Gronow pole fished pellets up in the water to win with 124lb of carp while his brother Gareth followed with 104lb and Neil Dibble completed a Cwmbran hat trick with 47lb.

Pieces of luncheon meat pole fished to the edge of the island tempted 62lb 9oz of carp to give Philip Jones, from Fochriw, first place in the Aberglais AC match on the New Canal at White Springs.

Merthyr members Gary Lewis and Brian Prothero filled the minor places with 57lb 6oz and 47lb 10oz.

Jones did it again at Redhill Fishery; but this time it was pellets and sweetcorn on the hook that gave him a winning 172lb 10oz in the club’s match on Sophie’s Pond.

Frank Davies caught 121lb 2oz of carp for second place and Mark Jones 113lb 5oz for third.

For the second week it was fishery owner Ian Heaps in first place in the open match on his Holgan Farm Fishery.

The Tench Lake was pegged and Heaps, who was World Champion when part of the 1970s England team, caught a modest 21lb 2oz on pole and pellets to beat Chris Wells with 17lb 10oz and Andrew Wray who was four ounces behind.

Ian Swanson, from Ebbw Vale, made it two wins in a row on his local Festival Park Lake when he caught 8lb 5oz of roach and perch in the Festival AC match to beat Dennis O’Leary by two ounces and Damian Scrivens who was third with 7lb 2oz.

Ian Swanson also did well when he took part in the open match at Worcesters­hire’s Woodland View Fishery and was runner up with 90lb 1oz.

The Mathern Mill carp were off the feed for the Saturday open at Mathern Mill where half a dozen good fish helped Cardiff competitor Lee Pesticcio to a winning 56lb 7oz.
