POOLER IN RUTHLESS FORM AS THEY HAND A LESSON TO BEDDAU

PONTYPOOL continued their storming start to the National Championsh­ip season with a crushing 66-17 victory over Beddau, writes Jay Bayford.

Ethan Davies and Rob Nash were both at the double for the reigning champions.

Jordan Thomas, Jamie Jeune, Matthew Jones, Clayton Gullis, Kieran Meek and Martin Luckwell then all followed them over the whitewash.

Matthew Jones and Tom Hancock shared kicking duty, with both recording four conversion­s.

Beddau replied through tries from Adam Ashford and Dai Francis while Zac Byard kicked two conversion­s and a penalty.

Elsewhere, Trebanos’ impressive start continued with a convincing 34-10 victory over Cardiff Met.

Ben Williams, Sam Davies, Tom Dew and Rhys Morgan added to a penalty try as One West Central champions Trebanos claimed their fourth win in six games.

Matthew Edwards sealed the victory with two conversion­s and a penalty.

And Tata Steel remain level on points with Trebanos following a simple 42-5 triumph over Glynneath.

Richard Carter, who won the Principali­ty Premiershi­p with Merthyr last season, and Jacob Williams both went over twice. Callum Bricknell and Jacob Lewis added further tries. Lloyd Bradley was on target with all six conversion­s.

Harry Williams bagged Glynneath’s hit all of Cardiff consolatio­n.

Elsewhere, Rhydyfelin continue to languish near the bottom as they narrowly lost 13-12 at Newcastle Emlyn.

Dai Gratton booted all of Rhydyfelin’s points, but they could only claim a losing bonus point as Alex Williams and Llyr Jones guided Emlyn to victory with tries. Dan Davies secured the win with a well-struck penalty.

Skewen sealed a big win as they saw off Newbridge 40-21.

Two penalty tries set them on their way and Gareth Morris and Adam Rowlands helped earn the bonus point.

Rowlands completed Skewen’s scoring with two conversion­s, three penalties and a drop goal.

Scott Williams, Matt Williams and Simon Veall were on the scoresheet for Newbridge, along with Eamonn Rees, who knocked in three conversion­s.

Meanwhile, Bedlinog and Narberth couldn’t be separated as they played out a 17-17 draw.

Tyler Oliver and Joshua Martin touched down for Bedlinog, who saw Dan Parry kick five points and Ben Grzesica add a conversion.

But last year’s runners-up Narberth fought back with Rhys Lane and Liam Hutchinson going over. Jonathan Rogers kicked the rest.

Away from league action, last year’s National Plate runners-up Ystalyfera look determined to make it back to the Principali­ty Stadium after they thumped Cwmavon 38-0 in the opening round of this year’s competitio­n.

Owen Phillips hit a brace and Callum Papp, Steffan Jones and Steffan Castle all followed him over. Castle then showed his kicking ability as he booted five conversion­s and a penalty to seal the rout.

And Penallta, who beat Ystalyfera on try count to claim the Plate last season, are also through as a Corey Tucker hat-trick helped them see off Risca 27-19.

Tondu were in rampant form as they cruised past Seven Sisters 55-14. Matthew John claimed a hat-trick and Mark Roberts, Aled Jones, Josh Tatchell, Nathan Strong and Sam Grabham all added further tries. Tatchell sealed the emphatic victory with six conversion­s and a penalty.
