Deadly man o’ war wash up on beaches

-

DEADLY Portugese man o’ war have been washing up for a number of weeks on Welsh beaches and now they have been spotted in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The latest sighting is at Ogmore beach in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Beach Academy Wales has shared a picture after finding two yesterday.

It has also had reports of sightings at St Donats and Monknash.

Others have reported seeing them on Trecco Beach and Rest Bay.

It has warned people not to touch the potentially deadly creature.

Man o’ war have tentacle-like polyps that can give an agonising and potentially lethal sting if touched.

The sting is particularly dangerous to small children.

Most of the sightings in Wales so far have been in Swansea and Carmarthenshire.

They usually live at the surface of the Atlantic Ocean but they have been found as far north as the Hebrides.

The creature has no way of propelling itself so it has to rely on currents, tides and winds to move which is why it will occasionally be driven into bays or on to beaches.

Recently, more man o’ war have been washing up on British beaches because of the warm weather.

Over the weekend, they were found in New Quay, Ceredigion, and there have been sightings in Jersey Marine in Swansea and Pembrey.
