Travellers leave a mess for second time this year

-

TRAVELLERS who set up home near one of Cardiff’s most popular parks have left the site, after being served with a removal notice.

Several caravans were seen arriving at a car park next to Llandaff Fields last Thursday.

Around 20 caravans were spotted at the site on Friday morning.

But Cardiff council yesterday confirmed the caravans have left the site.

A clean-up of the area afterwards saw local authority workers collect a tonne of rubbish and leaves from the site.

A spokesman said: “Officers from the council served a notice on the occupants under powers that we hold to remove unauthorised campers from our land.

“After they left the car park on Monday, our street cleansing team arrived at 1.30pm and removed litter, a mechanical sweeper then swept the area and the car park was jet washed on Tuesday morning.

“One tonne of waste and leaves was removed from the car park.”

One resident claimed it was the second time in three months that travellers had set up camp in the area.

Carolyn Bury, 54, who lives nearby, said they were also spotted back in June.

She added: “It was horrendous over the weekend. “There was just so much noise. “There was rubbish in the car park – bags of it was thrown everywhere.

“I had to get up and shut my window due to the noise at one point.”

She said the campers were asked to move on by officials on Monday.

The people in the caravans were also spotted collecting all the rubbish and placing it by the nearest bins before they left the site.

Carolyn added: “I just hope we can get a barrier put there or something. “The problem is they know where to go now so they’ll come back.

“One of the families I saw were also there back in June.”
